Brihanon is the sixty-eight-year-old Arch Scribe of the Western Isles. From the King’s Tower at Kan-Ta, Jarro, he preserves the surviving histories of an age now five hundred years gone.

The lands of his day are peaceful. The western kingdoms commune agreeably, and no dragon or wyvern has been seen in a hundred years. Yet the old accounts remain, incomplete and sometimes contradictory.
